Rock N Roll Wrestling have made Campbelltown a signature stop for school holiday shenanigans. This past weekend, we saw another loaded show at Campbelltown RSL!
Rock N Roll Wrestling are a Wollongong-based promotion, and while their Academy shows still run from that area, they’ve been expanding outside that region for their bigger shows in recent years. Thankfully, Campbelltown isn’t TOO far away.
This card saw a heated grudge match in our main event, a No Holds Barred battle between RNR Heavyweight Champion Lee Morrow, and the man who stole the physical belt at the last Campbelltown show, “Heartless” Morgan Rose. With Morgan flanked by his henchmen that he calls “The Dogs”, the champion, The Australian Hero, certainly has an uphill battle.
Let’s do this.
--------------------
No commentary desk, so I assume this isn’t going to be completely canon, a bit like the previous Goulburn school holiday show? The true big event for RNR is definitely their annual Rumble event next Saturday in Goulburn, but this will certainly serve as a tasty appetizer. I believe there’s a hard cam, and we’ve got Dicko in front of us with a phone doing the social clips. I also often do my own social clips when I attend shows in person, give us a follow on Instagram (cheap plug).
All that to say, I’m doing this show from memory of being there live, so there’ll be little play by play throughout this review.
Match 1: Otis (w/ Moses) vs. Robbie Zucco
Wow, Zucco’s denim short shorts are very distracting. Daisy Dukes aside, this one gets physical. Otis and Moses are co-holders of the Gold Rush briefcase- a very interesting scenario for when they do eventually cash in on their title opportunity. Meanwhile, Zucco came ever so close in the Gold Rush ladder match himself, arguably stealing the show with some of the risks he was taking as a veteran.
Anyway, this was a hard-fought, physical battle, with chops aplenty. Otis lands his signature pop-up powerbomb for a near fall, but when he attempts another signature- the cannonball- he gets nothing but turnbuckles. Zucco lands the top rope elbow, but it’s not enough to get the job done, as Moses causes a distraction. Otis seizes the opportunity, locking in a crucifix pin... and it gets the 3!
Winner: Otis
Thoughts: Great way to set the tone. Otis is a heat magnet, and the double act with Moses is really clicking, together they’re even more detestable. I do think they’re headed down the road to Splitsville with this Gold Rush briefcase causing a rift, but until then, they’re a force to be reckoned with for sure. Robbie Zucco, with all the years in the game, has seemed highly energised and motivated in recent RNR appearances, he’s a massive asset to the roster and the show.
Match 2: RNR Elite Championship- Michael Spencer vs. Lachy The Tradie
We saw Spencer enter Campbelltown RSL earlier in the day with daughter MJ Eagles, and my friend Brooke saw a flash of a pink feathery outfit in their bags that had her assuming MJ would be wrestling on the show. But no, Spencer just decided to slay with his gear in his Rock N Roll return- he was a mainstay many years ago when I first started attending RNR shows.
This match was highly dynamic, with Spencer using agility and flashy strikes to great effect. He landed his double rotation 619, sending Tradie reeling, and scored a convincing near fall off a Hidden Blade, which feels like a new addition to the arsenal. However, Lachy The Tradie is one of the unsung heroes of the NSW scene, and with a sharp new physique built by BodyBiz, can strike at a moment’s notice. And that moment came when Spencer missed another 619 attempt, allowing Tradie to strike with the Spear! And still.
Winner: Lachy The Tradie
Thoughts: Spencer didn’t win a title in his RNR return, but he was valiant in his attempt to take the gold. It was a high pace, Tradie was there every step of the way, an exciting watch. We have brand new physical championship belts in RNR, and with that new shine, perhaps a new level of motivation to make sure the matches are as polished as the belts?
Match 3: Moses vs. Robbie Eagles
Another big return here- first RNR appearance for the acclaimed Robbie Eagles in 6 years! It was circa 2014/2015 at Dapto Citizen’s Bowling Club, at a Rock N Roll show, where seeing Robbie hit a 450 Splash off the top rope in a room with an extremely low roof, that cemented my fandom of both Robbie and Aussie professional wrestling.
Moses had a similar background to me in a way, first encountering Robbie as a fan, later becoming Captain Keato, before shedding that skin a couple of years ago to become Moses. He has little redeeming qualities these days, but he does have that Gold Rush briefcase. He’s also become more agile in the transformation between Keato and Moses, putting Robbie on his heels with moves such as the slingblade and a cutter (RKO). Robbie’s got that experience though, and is able to rally with his signature flurry of kicks, then targeting the leg, all in service of setting up the 450 Splash to the leg, followed by the Ron Miller Special... and Moses is forced to tap!
Winner: Robbie Eagles
Thoughts: A big spot for Moses, being Robbie’s opponent in this return spot, and he nailed the role perfectly. The attitude, the ego, striking at the right moments- but ultimately the experience of the world-travelled Robbie Eagles was the deciding factor. Much like the Elite title match, a strongly-paced, athletic showcase throughout.
Intermission. Ring announcer Patrick made an announcement that platinum ticket holders could get in the ring for a photo opportunity, which is a fun bit of fan interaction. I remember doing that when Ryback came to Rock N Roll. I think my legs are just too short to go through the middle rope- or my legs just aren’t flexible enough due to the Cerebral Palsy. Anyway, I basically crotched myself on that middle rope, both painful and embarrassing. Da Big Guy was cool about it though. And I’ve learnt I need to do the “Diva’s entrance” in the years since.
Match 4: Six Man Tag: Hunter Hayes, Killa Kye & Zesty Zane vs. Maxx Damage, Cash Train & Tristan Slade
We had a “mystery partner” gimmick on the heel side and it’s Tristan Slade! I believe he’s been absent since the dissolution of the Greasers, but he seems to fit in well with the obnoxious MoneyMaxxing duo.
Kye gets beaten down for a portion of this one. He’s got a sleeve on his arm that I thought was a tattoo from a distance, but Brooke said they were little Hunter Hayes faces! I may need glasses... Zesty Zane gets a great response, and he does some hip swivelling and flashy offense. He goes for the moonsault but crashes and burns. Hunter gets the hot tag and makes the most of it, holding up a vertical suplex for a count of 30!
The match dissolves into absolute shenanigans. Hunter nails the DDT but Cash Train distracts the ref, allowing Slade to hit Hunter with his own championship belt! A groggy Maxx Damage then gets the 3 count.
Winners: Maxx Damage, Cash Train & Tristan Slade
Thoughts: A fine showcase of both the faces and the heels here, with a lot going on. Slade fit back into proceedings seamlessly- hopefully he’s around for more RNR dates- and Maxx and Cash really maximised their minutes, mouthing off to the crowd at every given opportunity. On the face side, Hunter’s been over for years, Kye is quite strongly established- the bubble machine entrance is especially a hit-, and Zane’s antics get stronger reactions every time out. He’s also putting in lots of work on the socials too.
Main Event: RNR Heavyweight Championship- No Holds Barred- Morgan Rose (w/ The Dogs) vs. Lee Morrow (c)
Morgan trolls the crowd by having Lee’s music hit first before sauntering out to his own. Lee doesn’t need a big entrance this time, running out sans music to take the fight to Morgan and his Dogs. Morgan has a crutch, which Lee quickly takes to use as an equaliser!
They battle into the crowd- as is contractually obliged in every RNR main event- and Lee does his battering ram spot, picking up a child to run feet first into Morgan. Wow, these kids are extremely sweary and fond of the middle finger. Where are their parents?!
The Dogs get wiped out for a time, and Lee produces a table! Before he can use it though, the Dogs save Morgan, and it’s Lee that gets powerbombed through the table! We also get a sledgehammer introduced, but the ante needs to be upped further, so we get a section of the steel barricade in the ring! It gets leant in the corner, and after a little back and forth, Lee hits the Widowmaker into the barricade for the win!
Winner: Lee Morrow
Thoughts: That was suitably wild for the stipulation. You’re not going to get prime ECW with RNR’s family-friendly product, but within those parameters, they delivered a satisfying battle with a variety of gimmicks. Lee is a great champion- it's such a shame that the USA trip didn’t work out as planned but he does an excellent job as the standard bearer for Rock N Roll. He looks the part, he has a strong presence and meaningful real life experiences that enhance his relatability despite being a mountain of muscle. And Morgan Rose is incredibly underrated- he has a great mind for wrestling and it shows in what he does in his performances. Knows when to get the heat and when to get his comeuppance.
Overall Thoughts
Rock N Roll delivered a high quality show from start to finish. I mentioned at the beginning that I wasn’t sure if it was canon, due to the lack of commentary and additional cameras. But there was nothing “house show” about the quality of this event. Was the return of top star Robbie Eagles a boost? Absolutely, but it wasn’t him alone. All the homegrown RNR stars stepped up in a major way to put on top tier pro wrestling all afternoon long, and momentum really feels on Rock N Roll Wrestling’s side as they look to their next major event, the Rock N Rumble next Saturday in Goulburn!
Overall Score: 8/10
Until next time, take care.
