I sat down with The Example, Ricky South the other night for an enlightening interview. He talks about his return to PWA at King of the Metro, his time overseas, which included a WWE tryout and participating in Power Slap! He also looks ahead to his next two major PWA events, The Climb and Prize Fight, as he gears up to challenge Will Kiedis for the PWA Heavyweight Championship. Ricky doesn't hold back in his opinions of the new champ!
After a year away from PWA, Ricky South is back, and he's wasting little time reminding everyone exactly why he was once the promotion's longest-reigning PWA Heavyweight Champion. For South, there was never really any question about whether he'd accept the opportunity to return.
"You've got to take them when they arise because they don't come that often," South told The Arena Media. "When the organisers of PWA reached out to possibly put something together and make a little bit of a surprise, I can never say no to PWA."
The road back begins at The Climb
Ricky's first stop after his King of the Metro return is The Climb, where he will team with Robbie Eagles to take on North Shore Wrestling- Sam Osborne & the new PWA Champion, Will Kiedis, who seized the gold from Big Fudge by cracking open his Golden Esky.
The pairing of South and Eagles is particularly intriguing given just how little the two have wrestled together in PWA. "We haven't had any sort of match in any sort of setting for about 11 or 12 years," Ricky revealed. "We've only wrestled PWA once in a singles, and that was my second or third match."
As for his opponents, South was quick to make clear that he has considerable respect for Osborne as an athlete and wrestler. His feelings towards Kiedis, however, are considerably less complimentary. Kiedis has positioned himself as someone capable of leading PWA and putting an end to what South describes as the promotion's current "feel-good" atmosphere. Ricky isn't convinced.
"I just don't think when you stack up all of the credentials it takes to be a historic champion, someone that leads PWA, I just don't think Will Kiedis has any of it."
Those are strong words from a man who knows exactly what it takes to lead PWA.
PWA heads to Anita's Theatre for Prize Fight
Following The Climb, the stakes get even higher. South will challenge Will Kiedis for the PWA Heavyweight Championship at Prize Fight on September 26, as PWA makes its debut at Anita's Theatre in Thirroul. For South, the venue represents another exciting step for PWA.
"I wouldn't be surprised if that quickly becomes one of the hot spot venues for Aussie wrestling," he said.
And with Prize Fight serving as the debut, South believes PWA has an opportunity to make a statement.
"Prize Fight's the debut show and we're going to kick it off well."
Power Slap & The WWE Tryout
When asked about the highs and lows of his international excursion, Ricky South cited the Vancouver scene and his experiences at the Lions Gate Dojo as some of the highlights. He laughed when saying that getting knocked out in front of UFC President Dana White at Power Slap was one of the low points.
But it wasn't all bad. "When you realise, well, you know what, all expenses paid, trip to Vegas, and a very good match fee..." there's definitely perks as far as Ricky was concerned. And he also believes that the Power Slap experience may have led to his WWE tryout opportunity.
"I don't like living with regrets because every decision I ever make leaves me right to where I am, and I'm pretty happy where I am right now."
Even if Matt Bloom took the opportunity to say, "Hey, Ricky, how was Power Slap?" during his promo.
"Yeah, not well, mate."
Setting The Example As A WWE PC Coach?
Beyond the immediate future of challenging Will Kiedis at Prize Fight for the PWA Heavyweight Championship, Ricky had quite an interesting answer when asked about his future goals.
"I want to be a coach at the PC. I've made it known to a lot of people, some people even in WWE."
With the Loose Ledge Adam Brooks recently serving as a guest coach at the PC, and Hartley Jackson previously spending a couple of years coaching at the PC, it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility that The Example could one day take his expertise to Orlando.
